Not the Adventure We Planned For

It was going to be a great trip. We were headed to Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave National Park, Vegas and Zion National Park. There was going to be hiking and exploring. We were going to slide down sand dunes and climb rocks. Staying in hotels is exhilarating enough for my crew. Eating out. Staying up late. Seeing new sights.

Plans changed. But we still experienced quite the adventure.

Traveling South bound on Highway 5 the day after Christmas, traffic was heavy. We would get up to 65 for a few miles only to slow back down to 10 miles an hour. Our plan of arriving at 8 pm looked more like an 11 pm arrival at best. The kids had just eaten dinner and were just starting a movie. It was about 7:00 and the kids had been awesome the whole way. I was trying to convince myself that it would all be worth it the next morning when we took our first hike and the kids ran freely through the desert with their usual zest for life.

I saw the vehicle two cars ahead begin to break. I started to slow. The car in front of me did not. When the driver in front of us realized traffic was stopping they hammered their breaks causing a chain reaction. We were car number 3 in a 7 car pile up. The last vehicle was a semi truck that accordioned all 7 cars together. Our van was impacted on three sides by 3 different vehicles. We had 4 separate impacts. It was a bizarre experience hearing all of the crashes one right after the other. It all took a matter of seconds but it seemed it would never end.

Fortunately, we were driving Bertha. We named her accordingly. She is one big bad mamma jamma. And she took the beating for us. We also apparently had our guardian angels in the car. Because, though we did end up with 4 kiddos banged up and crying, and one transported to ER via ambulance as a precaution, there were no major injuries in our vehicle. And of the 7 vehicles involved, only one other vehicle had injuries. Both passengers of that vehicle were transported via ambulance for minor injuries. I was told by the EMT they were expecting much more significant injuries based on the number of vehicles and speeds involved. They had a helicopter on stand by. All of the emergency personnel were relieved and grateful to see us all conscious and coherent.

As with everything in our family we found a way to make this adventure memorable and fun. Yep, I said fun. The kids thought this was a great adventure.

It started with the CHP coming to the vehicle and asking, "Okay, who are all the kids." I responded that they were all mine. After the look of incredulity, I clarified that some are adopted but all 7 children are my children. He then asked, "And you are the ONLY adult in the vehicle?" To which I had to clarify twice that yes, I was indeed alone with my 7 children.

Around this time the emergency personnel had assessed all of the parties involved and realized the medical needs were super minor. So most of the firemen began congregating around our van to interact with the kids. They were smiling and joking and trying to keep all the littles distracted and reassured. The boys thought this was amazing. They were pointing at the tow trucks and fire engines and the ambulance and police cars. I appreciate all of these men and their willingness to help keep the kids calm and entertained.

Once it was determined that Amber was going to travel in the ambulance to ER for clearance the Highway Patrol asked me what to do with the kids. Because Amber was conscious I was required to accompany her in the ambulance which would leave my other 6 children alone. They offered to drive the kids to their sub station and watch them until Brad or I could pick them up.

At first we thought Bertha was not derivable so the kids were going to ride in police vehicles. This was a thrilling prospect to the littles. After I pulled away in the ambulance the officers were able to duct tape the tail light back onto the vehicle and throw the side mirror and other loose parts inside. Though the doors were not functioning properly, they were able to close everything up so they deemed Bertha 'drivable' and had a fireman drive the kids to the substation.

At the hospital, Amber was quickly cleared by the ER doctors. I can only imagine what they had expected when told on the radio there was a 12 year old girl involved in a 7 car pile up at speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour. There were two doctors standing in the doorway ready to run alongside her gurney. We were so very blessed. A small concussion, walnut sized lump on the back of her head and some mild whip lash were all they could find. They still did a few simple tests including an abdominal ultrasound just to rule everything out. But within 20 minutes they realized all was well and settled on 'observation' for the next 3 hours before releasing her.

Amber right before release. Posing with her "Siren the Rescue Dog" the EMT gave her.

Brad was still an hour away when we were released so we took Uber back to the CHP sub station to get the kids and Bertha. Brad had gotten us a hotel and was on his way to meet us.

The boys sleeping on the floor of a conference room in the CHP office. They had been wonderful.

While I was away the CHP officers had insisted on getting the kids something from the store. This exchange was amusing to Brad and I. We are so grateful for our confident and independent kiddos who can go with the flow.

CHP: "Okay, Caitlin, we are going to go the store to get you guys some food. What should we get?"
Caity: "Oh, we ate dinner right before the accident. We don't need anything."
CHP: "Oh. Well my kids always eat right before bed, are you sure you don't want some snacks or something."
Caity: "No, we really should be fine."
CHP: "Well do you need some chocolate milk or regular milk or something?"
Caity: "No, my mom doesn't let the boys drink much before bed or they'll be up in the night going to the bathroom."
CHP: "How about some sodas then."
Caity: "Actually, we don't really drink soda and I know my mom wouldn't want them to have soda before bed."
CHP: "Okay, can we at least get you some waters?"
Caity (feeling rude at this point): "Water would be great, thank you."

The officers went out to purchase bottled waters for each of the kids and made sure to stop at IHOP on the way back to get coloring books and crayons for them all as well. Each of the boys received a stuffed animal from the officers which they thought was amazing. Caity reported that the boys happily colored and watched movies until far beyond their normal bed time before settling into the sleeping bags we had brought for our trip with their new stuffed animals.

When I arrived everyone but Caity was asleep. I carried the two littlest boys to their seats and the big kids all climbed over the seats back into Bertha and we hobbled her to the hotel. She was making some noises and pulling to the right a bit. But we made it to our room about 2:00 and the kids settled quickly back to sleep.

Wednesday morning we took things slow at our hotel and spent a fair amount of time communicating with the insurance company. We were told we could drive Bertha home if we followed certain guidelines. And, after a morning romp at a nearby park, that's just what we did. Bertha was good to us and we made it home without incident.

Thursday when I took Bertha to the collision repair center for our insurance company I was immediately told she is not safe to drive and they could not let me leave with her. Oops.

It's hard to tell in the picture but the doors and the floor are actually pushed into the trunk.

The rear doors and side doors wont open any more.

I didn't get pictures of the front of the van or down the side where one of the other cars hit. That damage was far more minor. And I thought I took a picture of the back doors with the most significant damage, but I can't find it.

It looks like the frame is bent and the entire back half of the vehicle has buckled. We aren't sure if we will get our Bertha back or not. They have to do a 'tear down' which will include cutting the doors off just to complete the estimate. Even if the insurance does choose to repair her, we wont get the car back for at least a month.

And so, now we try to figure out how to get our family of 10 around town without a car that can fit us all. Bessie and Whitey just got promoted to full time duty...

In the end we are feeling incredibly blessed. The number of details that were perfect during and after the crash are overwhelming. As usual, we can see the miracles all around and we are overwhelmed by gratitude for the best possible outcome.

Amber complained of a headache and sore neck for about two days before returning to her normal bouncy self. All of the boys other bumps and bruises are already forgotten. And we are all home safe and sound.

Checking Out

I was taken out by a silly little virus Friday. It had already made it's way through most of the family, including my parents and brother. It hit me pretty hard. Fortunately, I am married to the world's best husband who quickly stepping in and took up the slack. So devotionals still happened (thank goodness I planned ahead) and all of the usual Christmas traditions still happened. The kids had an amazing Christmas. I love 'first' Christmases. And I took lots of pictures.

I had planned a trip with the kids before the holiday. We were supposed to leave this morning. I told Brad if I woke up feeling like a million bucks we would still go. I wouldn't put a million dollar price tag on my morning, but I do feel good enough to take this show on the road. Our goal is to leave by nap time. So I will catch up on blog posts some time next week.

We're outta here!

Christmas Devotional Day 17

Luke 2: 16-17 "And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child."

Christmas Devotional Day 16

Luke 2: 15 "And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us."

Tonight we read the lyrics to the song rather than singing and then played the video below.

Angels we have heard on high
Sweetly singing o'er the plains
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains
Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing,
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo
Gloria, in excelsis Deo

Christmas Devotional Day 15

Luke 2: 13 "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

After reading our scripture and right before watching the video we made a tiny mention to the kids about people around the world celebrating Jesus birth in their own way. Many different faiths, many different beliefs, many different traditions, all celebrating the same Jesus. They were fascinated by this idea and asked a lot of questions, as usual. Brad spent a fair amount of the video shushing people. Perhaps next time we will watch the video first.

Christmas Devotional Day 14

The last week of school before Christmas break is always hectic. Parties, gifts, performances and burn out seem to happen all at the same time. I hadn't realized the last time we did this the way the devotionals tapered off and became more simple as school came to a close. I am glad I inadvertently planned them this way. A scripture and song was all we could handle tonight. But I am looking forward to our more interactive devotionals returning at the end of the week.
Luke 2:10 "And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord."

The best part of this devotional was hearing everyone sing, "To save us all from Satan's power..." and Amber stopped singing to say, "Oh! I always thought it said 'Santa's' power."

We had a good laugh as we sang.

Christmas Devotional Day 14

Last night was simple. Scripture, video and song.

Luke 2: 9 "And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid."

Christmas Devotional Day 13

We skipped another day. Company Christmas party. Sigh. Real life.

Saturday night Brad bundled all of the kids up, laid out our waterproof picnic blanket in the front yard and snuggled together with the small people under a few other blankets. Caity and I weren't home so Daddy had to fly solo. They all laid on their backs together so that they could see the stars. Daddy read the scripture for the night and played "Do You Hear What I Hear." (audio only) The kids listened quietly to the words with occasional complaints of being cold. Once the song was over Brad told the kids they could go inside. But by that point they had gotten rather snug under the blankets and lingered under the stars a bit.

Luke 2: 8 "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night."

Christmas Devotional Day 12

We skipped a day. Last night the train fell off the tracks a bit so I chose to simply skip.

But tonight we had a special devotional planned and I was not going to miss! We are fortunate to have some friends who recently bought a ranch. Having just done "Away in a Manger" and with our song tonight being "Friendly Beasts" a visit to the ranch was perfect.

After sunset we all climbed onto the hay stack for our scripture and video.

Luke 2: 7 "And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

I'm pretty sure this will be the kids' favorite devotional...

Christmas Devotional Day 10

Tonight we kept thing simple. We just read the scripture and sang together. I had a more elaborate activity planned. But life does get in the way from time to time. The scripture and singing was perfect.

Luke 2:6-7 "And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

Christmas Devotional Day 9

This was meant to be a more elaborate devotional but we ran out of time. So, we simplified and improvised. We made a sign that said "Galilee" and a sign that said "Bethlehem". We place the signs on the two couches in our living room across the room from each other. After reading the scriptures we played the song, "When Joseph Went to Bethlehem." Dad was the donkey and Amber rode on his back with a pillow in her shirt to make her appear "great with child." Each of the boys took a turn leading the donkey to Bethlehem while the song played. The kids got a kick out leading the donkey (even the teen who was home). And I was pleasantly surprised to hear at least 3 of the kids singing along.

Luke 2:3-5  "And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judæa, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."

You can click this link to listen to the song. Here are the lyrics:

  1. 1. When Joseph went to Bethlehem, I think he took great care
To place his tools and close his shop and leave no shavings there.
He urged the donkey forward then, with Mary on its back,
And carried bread and goat cheese in a little linen sack.
  2. 2. I think there at the busy inn that he was meek and mild
And awed to be the guardian of Mary’s sacred child.
Perhaps all through the chilly hours he smoothed the swaddling bands,
And Jesus felt the quiet strength of Joseph’s gentle hands.
  3. 3. And close beside the manger bed, he dimmed the lantern’s light
And held the little Jesus close upon that holy night
Less than 5 minutes of donkey rides around the living room... Sometimes it is the little things.

Christmas Devotional Day 8

Tonight we livened things back up with a silly devotional. This was one of my favorites the first time we did it (three years ago before Justin came home) and it will be one of my favorites again. I thought I would get some push back from the teenagers but, as luck would have it, Justin and Caitlin were gone this evening and without the peer pressure to influence him, Nathan thought this was awesome.

Luke 1: 39-42, 44  "39 And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40 And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42 And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 44 For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy."

After reading our verses we were all encouraged by mom to join in the dancing to this video as we watched on the big screen in the game room. This was our 'leap for joy'.  We actually have a fun family story of Amber 'leaping for joy' in mom's tummy so we encouraged the kids to all imagine this dance from inside the womb. Mom made sure to move all of the furniture out of the way so there was room for EVERYONE to participate. We turned the lights off dance-party-style to give the kids some cover.

I had only intended on continuing the video through the first take at around 3 minutes. But the kids loved it so much they BEGGED to do it all three times. I was shocked to see all 6 of them keep up the moves through all ten minutes laughing and giggling the whole way.

Christmas Devotional Day 7

I knew I wouldn't be home for bedtime last night so our devotional happened at the table right after dinner instead.

I try to keep this one relatively quiet (I have 6 boys). The activity is a simple coloring page. We all gathered around the table with the crayons and color pages and read scripture verses for the night. We told the kids they could start coloring while we read and they needed to stay quiet during the song while everyone finished coloring. Mom read in Alma and Dad read in Luke.

Alma 7:10 "And behold, he shall be born of Mary, at Jerusalem which is the land of our forefathers, she being a virgin, a precious and chosen vessel, who shall be overshadowed and conceive by the power of the Holy Ghost, and bring forth a son, yea, even the Son of God.

Luke 1: 26-38 "26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

This was our coloring page tonight.

Everyone colored the same picture while listening to Amy Grant's Breath of Heaven. (Audio only) We shushed the kids and asked them to focus for just the 5 minutes of the song and listen to the words while they were coloring or sitting quietly once they were done.

As the kids each finished their picture they hung it on the refrigerator and came back to their spot at the table to have a cookie and watch this video to finish our devotional.

Unusual reverence was the goal for tonight's devotional. We were surprisingly successful considering the number of little boys participating.

Christmas Devotionals Day 6

Last night we were at my parents house for dinner and did our family devotional together with them. They just arrived home from a special trip to Europe to see the Christmas markets so we were hearing all about their adventures and looking at pictures. This worked perfectly into our devotional for the evening.

We started with the ASL video of Joy to the World.

After the signing video we put star stickers on a world map in countries that we (mom, dad, nana and papa) have visited. We then changed gears and talked about where our family members were born. We all put a star on the world map representing where our family members, including nana and papa, were born. And last, we asked the kids if they knew where on the map Jesus was born and added one more star to our map.

We took turns reading one verse each of Psalm 98 4-9.

Psalm 98:4-9 "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. Sing unto the Lord with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the Lord, the King. Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity."

And then we all made 'a loud noise' and a 'joyful noise' with roaring, singing and clapping to close our devotional.

When we arrived home from our visit we watched this video before family prayers to finish off the day.
